Welsh In English Medium Schools
Cymraeg 2050: A million Welsh speakers’ sets out our ambition of creating a million Welsh speakers by 2050.
Learning Welsh is mandatory in all schools in Wales. All learners should have appropriate pathways for learning Welsh and English to enable them to develop the confidence to use both languages in everyday life. Schools should ensure rich language environments for all learners and reading, listening, speaking and writing across the curriculum should be developmentally appropriate. Across Merthyr Tydfil, learners will start learning from nursery to 16 years old.
At 14 years old, learners are able to study for a qualification in Welsh.

New qualifications
As part of the changes to GCSE in the Made for Wales qualifications, a new Welsh GCSE will be introduced. These are
- GCSE Core Cymraeg
- Level 2 Award in Additional Core Cymraeg (builds on the skills in Core Cymraeg)

Siarter Iaith (Welsh Language Charter) is a national framework which all schools in Merthyr Tydfil are working towards. It has different levels for each school to achieve.

The college offers opportunities for students to study Welsh at a variety of levels, from basic, through to A level Welsh.
Welsh medium provision at the college is currently increasing – all learners have the opportunity to produce any pieces of their work through the medium of Welsh.
You do not have to study through the medium of Welsh to benefit from Welsh medium services at the college. The Welsh Language Officer - Lynwen Harrington will support and advise you.
