Welsh Medium Education In Merthyr Tydfil: 3 to 11 years old

Merthyr Tydfil is proud to offer Welsh-medium education in primary schools. Welsh-medium education creates bilingual learners who are proficient in both Welsh and English.

There are many advantages and long-term benefits to being able to speak both Welsh and English proficiently in Wales.

When children begin learning Welsh, they will be immersed in the language from the start. This is an internationally recognised method of learning languages now included in countries such as Canada and the Basque Country. Welsh is spoken throughout the Foundation learning (nursery to Year 2) after this, children will have lessons in English and use English in some of their lessons across the curriculum.

In Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, there are now three Welsh-medium primary schools.

Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Santes Tudful

Ysgol Santes Tudful is a Welsh medium school that is firmly rooted in the town of Merthyr Tudful.  It provides high quality Welsh-medium education to over 440 pupils with English introduced in Year 3. This ensures that all the pupils leave the school competent and confident in their use of both languages and thoroughly prepared for the transition to YsgolGyfun Rhydywaun.  The school provides a range of rich educational experiences and prepares the pupils to become responsible bilingual citizens that respect each other, their peers, their heritage and their environment.
