The main operator of public transport in Merthyr Tydfil is Stagecoach. The company operate local services as well as services out of the County Borough such as Abergavenny, Newtown and Cardiff.

These bus services are operated along commercially viable routes at such times as operators feel they can make a profit.
Where there is an area where no commercial service is available, but the Council considers there is an unmet need, the Transport Section then invites tenders from bus operators for a specified level of service. These services are subsidised by the Local Authority and are run under contract to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.
