For clarity, please indicate which of the following apply: Yes Under the Curriculum for Wales 2022, schools are not required to plan for or deliver instruction in specific named dance styles (such as ballet, tap, or salsa). Instead, the curriculum encourages a holistic and flexible approach that prioritises the development of disciplinary and inter-disciplinary skills in and through dance. Dance is considered a creative and expressive form within the Expressive Arts Area of Learning and Experience, and may also be used to support learning in other areas such as Health and Well-being or Humanities. Rather than focusing on particular dance genres, the emphasis is on developing learners’ skills in movement, performance, composition, collaboration, and creative expression. Schools are encouraged to respond to learner interests, local contexts, and broader curriculum goals, enabling pupils to experience a wide range of dance opportunities that may draw from multiple traditions and styles. For example, a project exploring cultural identity might include elements of contemporary dance fused with traditional Welsh folk movements, allowing pupils to create original choreography that expresses personal or collective narratives. Similarly, learners might explore rhythm and timing through street-style or hip-hop influences while developing coordination and spatial awareness. As such, dance provision is flexible, responsive, and skill-focused, rather than being defined by a fixed set of dance styles.
