The petitions process allows members of the public to have direct influence on the political process and to raise concerns that are important to them.

Before submitting a petition, you should:

What is a petition?

A petition can relate to any issue the Council has power or duties on.  They are a way of suggesting a change or influence by:

  • Raising awareness of an issue
  • Influencing a change in Council policy or service delivery
  • Leading to a debate in the Council; or
  • Prompting a committee or a Councillor to act themselves

How to submit a petition

Petitions can be submitted in one of the following ways:

  • E-Petitions can be created and browsed via the Council's e-petitions link.  They will not be accepted from other online petition systems.
  • Paper petitions are a way of collecting supporters' signatures onto a list.  You can use our printable petition template, but if you use your own template, be sure to include the details of the issue at the top of every page.

Paper petitions can be submitted either:

  • By post to Democratic Services, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, Civic Centre, Castle Street, Merthyr Tydfil, CF47 8AN
  • By email to democratic@merthyr.gov.uk; or
  • Handed in at the Civic Centre, Castle Street, Merthyr Tydfil, CF47 8AN or to your local Councillor.
