Five Essential Ways to Protect Yourself from Rogue Traders
- Categories : Press Release
- 06 May 2025

Rogue traders use pushy tactics to make you agree to work. Protect yourself with these simple steps:
- Verify Their Identity – Ask for ID, check online reviews, and verify their credentials with official trade associations.
- Don’t Feel Pressured – Take your time and don’t agree to anything quickly. High-pressure sales tactics are a red flag.
- Check the Paperwork – Always read contracts carefully and ensure they include full details of the work, costs, and cancellation rights.
- Never Pay Upfront – A genuine trader won’t demand large sums of money before work starts.
- Talk to Neighbours – They may have experienced the same issue. A quick conversation could prevent someone else from falling victim.
Know Your Cancellation Rights!
When agreeing to a consumer contract at home, you usually have a 14-day cooling-off period where you can cancel for any reason without penalty, under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013.
- 14-day rule – You typically have 14 days to cancel after signing.
- No reason needed – You can cancel without explanation.
- Full refund – If cancelled within 14 days, you’re entitled to a full refund.
- Notification required – Inform the seller in writing within the period.
Exceptions to Cancellation Rights:
- Low-value goods – Some small purchases may not be covered.
- Certain financial services – Some services like insurance contracts have different cancellation rules.
- Personalized/custom goods – If an item has been specifically made for you, cancellation rights may not apply.
Always read contracts carefully before signing. Keep evidence of cancellation in writing. Contact Trading Standards for advice if unsure.
If you feel unsafe, close the door and call someone for advice. Always trust your instincts!
