We met with Mr Craig Lynch, Deputy Head at Pantysgallog Primary School, who sparked the idea of Merthyr Tydfil’s very own Primary School Rugby World Cup, taking place on Wednesday 18 October, 10am-2pm at the Wern, Merthyr RFC.

Mr Lynch is passionate about his local communities and increasing sport and physical activity in schools, with a goal to bring schools together in a fun and competitive environment.

We asked him some questions about the upcoming tournament.

Where did the idea come from?
As part of our work with the new curriculum, we strive for authentic learning opportunities. I identified the Rugby World Cup in France as an engaging stimulus for pupils, and an opportunity for Class 10 – children aged 8 and 9 (Years 4&5) - to plan, organise and run their own event. Pupils have a great interest in sport and the World Cup, and Class 10 wanted to maximise the impact of the event.

As part of their hard work toward the tournament, pupils have communicated with schools and organisations, gained sponsorship, ordered equipment and managed a budget. They have developed these real-life skills during the planning stage of the project, and it has been wonderful to see them thrive and shine in a different context.

What are the benefits of being involved?
The main benefit is increased physical activity, and we want the tournament to have a positive impact upon the wellbeing of everyone involved. All players will be developing their rugby skills in a competitive and structured environment. All players and schools will be expected to follow rules and guidelines which encourage fair play and sportsmanship. All schools have an equal chance to be crowned ‘World Cup Champions of Merthyr 2023’ – what a great achievement!

Who is taking part?
There are 20 primary schools from Merthyr taking part. They are: Pantysgallog, Dowlais, Ysgol Y Graig, Goetre, Gellifaelog, Gwaunfarren, St Illtyds, St Marys, St Aloysius, Cyfarthfa Park, Coed Y Dderwen, Heolgerrig, Twynyrodyn, Caedraw, Trelewis, Bedlinog, Troedyrhiw, Ysgol Santes Tudfil, Abercanaid, Edwardsville.

Each school will be allocated a country to represent from the World Cup 2023 in France. Pupils from Years 5 and 6 will represent their schools, and one of our rules is that there must be at least one girl on the pitch at all times.

When will it happen?
Wednesday 18 October, 10am-2pm at the Wern, Merthyr RFC.

Ex Wales Captain, Mr Paul Thorburn, will be attending to present the winning trophies to the champions.

How can the local community get involved?
Spectators are welcome to attend the event! Families are encouraged to come and support their school/countries. Schools are encouraged to prepare flags and banners for their allocated country to add to the atmosphere of the day! Please come and support us!

Thank you
To Merthyr RFC for kindly allowing us to use their wonderful facilities for the day.

We have been very lucky to receive support and sponsorship from New Directions Recruitment who have sponsored t-shirt for all competing schools in the colours of their countries.

Valleys Education has also generously sponsored t-shirts for all Class 10 event organisers. Active Merthyr have also sponsored trophies for the winners and medals for all participants.
