🟠❄️ Weather update 🟠❄️
Some areas, particularly in the upper valley, have experienced snow, but many areas are looking ok with main roads clear. Side streets are the worsts affected so we will deploy teams to those areas today.
Road surface temperatures are already above zero and are forecast to continue rising, which will help thaw out any areas that have had snow.
Any school closure decisions are made by the school themselves and in the case of a partial or full closure, they will update the following webpage:
Thursday 8th January 2026:
6:30pm

We are aware that some areas in Merthyr Tydfil that are on higher ground are experiencing accumulations of snow and driving conditions are becoming treacherous.

Please take care on the roads if you need to be out and about, but where possible please stay home and stay safe.

4pm:

🟠 AMBER WARNING FOR SNOW 🟠

The Met Office has issued an Amber warning for snow from 8pm today until 9am on Friday.

In preparation for this, our staff have been busy filling the grit bins within our communities.

If you notice a grit bin that needs filling, please use our online form to request a refill (you can also view the grit bin locations here):

Our gritting crews are also working to keep roads safe

  •  They're gritting all main routes.
  • Side streets will be gritted in the event of a ‘white out’
  • Please note: roads cannot be gritted for around 3hours after rainfall.
  • Please park considerately so the vehicles can get access

Please be assured:

  • We are as prepared as we can be
  • We have resources in place and on standby
  • We have plenty of grit available
