Traffic lights to get overhaul in Active Travel plans

Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians will benefit from the replacement of old traffic lights on a busy Merthyr Tydfil road as part of the Council’s plans for improving Active Travel across the county borough.

Work will begin next Tuesday (6 April) on the signals at the junction of the A4102 where it intersects the A4054 Cyfarthfa Road and Nantygwenith Street, near Cyfarthfa Retail Park. 

The lights are more than 20 years old and will have smarter technology to improve vehicle flow.  While the work is being carried out, the Council is also taking the opportunity to improve the shared use crossing facility along the Taff Trail.

Currently a two-phase signal-controlled puffin along the Taff trail means people crossing must stop half way and wait in a central reserve for another green light.

This is being replaced with a single phase toucan crossing to allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross the road in a straight line and does not require waiting in the middle. 

The work is the first stage of improvements for Active Travel in the area and we plan to continue further improvements along Bethesda Street later in the year.

The work is expected to take four weeks, and traffic control and flows will be maintained to keep inconvenience to our road users to a minimum, with temporary pedestrian crossings in Swansea Road, Nantygwenith Street and Bethesda Street.
