Support for Ukraine
MEDIA PROTOCOLS/ INFORMATION FOR THE PRESS
We think it is important to ensure positive news stories are being shared with Welsh media, but we will always ensure that the dignity and privacy of individuals and families is maintained in our County Borough.
We are aware that the media are currently very keen to engage in how we are progressing with the Ukrainian refugee scheme, however the safety of those arriving is of paramount importance to us as an authority. We also have a responsibility as a Council to mitigate the likelihood of hate crime or misinformation, therefore the following procedures and rules are in place:
- We will not publicly disclose the location of any welcome centres or homes within any of our communications to safeguard those who will be housed there. We have seen many examples of negative comments seeking to disrupt and cause distress to those arriving.
- We would ask that the media do not directly approach Ukrainian families in the borough.
- Discuss media interview opportunities with us and provide clarity of the ask, so that individuals/families can make an informed decision on whether they are comfortable.
- We will always ask for the journalist’s questions in advance to scrutinise tone, language, stereotypes etc regarding this evolving situation.

Other ways to help:
If you want to support in any way but cannot offer accommodation, you can donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee. These groups of charities work on the ground in Ukraine and neighbouring countries to provide essentials supplies, such as food, water, shelter and medical assistance.
People wishing to donate may do so through the Ukraine appeal. A financial donation can be made through the appropriate channels, such as the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). This is the preferred option rather than making physical donations of goods, otherwise it can cause logistical issues.
Welsh Government Guidance can be found on the Welsh Governments Ukraine: support for people affected page.
