Breakfast clubs

The Welsh Assembly Government Primary School Free Breakfast Initiative

The Welsh Assembly Government made a commitment to provide for all children of primary school age registered in maintained primary schools in Wales to have a free, healthy breakfast at school each day. It will allow those that, for whatever reason, have not had breakfast, to have one in school.

Restricting the initiative to Primary Schools is principally intended to ensure not only that our youngest children are given a flying start in life, but also to ensure that the increasing practice of skipping breakfast is stemmed at the earliest possible age.

Breakfast has long been recognised as the most important meal of the day and evidence shows that a healthy breakfast is linked to better health, concentration and behaviour in children.

Experience has also shown that successful breakfast schemes in schools have led to positive attitudinal changes - improved attendance, improved behaviour, fewer discipline problems and greater sustained concentration.

Merthyr Tydfil is proud that every school offers a free breakfast club.

The free breakfast club initiative is aimed at providing primary school pupils with the opportunity of receiving a free, healthy breakfast at school each day.

It has been proven that enjoying a good breakfast in the morning increases a pupil's concentration and behaviour at school. Breakfast Clubs also offer supervised play and social time in the morning, preparing the child for the day ahead and improving punctuality and attendance.

Breakfast Clubs are also useful for parents who need to start work early.

Timings of Breakfast Clubs vary from school to school, but typically run from 8.10am to 8.50am.

Contact your school to find out how to register your child for breakfast club.

All children who attend will receive breakfast.

We offer the following breakfast selections:

  • Rice Krispies
  • Weetabix
  • Cornflakes
  • Toast
  • Fruit Juice
  • A portion of fruit

We can also provide for special diets.
