Pen Y Dre High School

Pen Y Dre High School

Project Description:

Pen Y Dre High School is currently being fully refurbished in phases to meet new Net Zero Carbon in Operation standards set by Welsh Government. This is the first refurbishment of a whole school to these standards in Wales and the pioneering nature of this project has already resulted in two awards - the Net Zero Carbon Project Award in both the Welsh National and UK National Construction Excellence Awards.

When the project is finished the school will have an increased capacity of 1050 pupils. The school has been organised into Areas of Learning based on the new Curriculum for Wales, allowing for increased collaboration between departments. In addition to the refurbishment of all teaching, offices, and hall spaces the site will benefit from new ICT infrastructure, upgraded pool facilities and new multi-use games area (MUGA).

Phase 1 of the project was completed in December 2023 and the school have been using these new facilities since January 2024. Phase 2 of the project is set to finish in early 2025 with the final Phase is due for completion in 2026.
