The Governing Body is delighted to invite you to apply for the position of Deputy Headteacher at Cyfarthfa High School. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a school that is proud of its place at the heart of the community and committed to providing the very best education for every learner.
Governors seek a highly experienced professional whose dedication, inspiration, and knowledge can guide the school forward to even greater success. At Cyfarthfa High School, candidates will find a team of highly committed and supportive staff members who consistently go the extra mile for their pupils. Staff are eager to learn and embrace innovation, supported by forward-thinking leaders who value collaboration and continuous improvement.
The school is actively engaged in cross-authority networks, ensuring that our approaches are informed by best practice and shared expertise. We have created a nurturing and welcoming environment where every student is encouraged to achieve their full potential. While we are proud of our achievements, we recognise that we are on an improvement journey following the inspectorate judgement in June 2024, which placed the school in special measures.
The Governing Body is pleased with the extremely positive progress being made thanks to the determined efforts of the whole community. The changes implemented to date have been significant and impactful, and the Governing Body, Local Authority, and Estyn partners are fully committed to supporting the school on its improvement journey. Governors are not resting on their laurels—their aim is to ensure that every student at Cyfarthfa High School flourishes and becomes the very best version of themselves within a challenging and supportive environment.
To achieve this, governors require a candidate of the highest calibre to fill the role of Deputy Headteacher at Cyfarthfa High School. This is a role for a visionary practitioner who is excited about the future of education in Merthyr Tydfil and beyond and who is ready to lead and support the school’s improvement journey.
Governors are looking for a dynamic, visionary Deputy Headteacher who will:
• bring successful leadership experience within secondary education;
• inspire and motivate both students and staff to achieve excellence;
• be a strategic thinker with a clear vision for continued success;
• work collaboratively with the Governing Body and wider community;
• demonstrate proven leadership, management, and interpersonal skills;
• communicate with clarity, confidence, and approachability;
• champion high standards and equity for every learner.
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
We are legally obliged to ask you to provide evidence of your right to work in the UK. If you are invited to interview, you will be asked to provide appropriate documents such as your full birth certificate/passport/work permit in accordance with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996.
This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and a comprehensive screening process will be undertaken on all applicants. This will include an enhanced check with the Disclosure and Barring Service.
Visits to the school prior to application are welcomed, as are informal discussions with the Headteacher, Mr Ben Davies. We invite candidates along to visit the school on Monday 8th June at 2pm. To make an appointment, or if you are unable to make this session, please contact our School Manager, Emma Lewis, on Emma.Lewis2@merthyr.gov.uk .
