Pre-nursery and nursery school admissions

Children are eligible for a pre-nursery place from the school term after their third birthday. The appropriate time to register your child’s details is at the age of two.

How to apply for a pre-nursery and nursery school place

Applications are made by completing a pre-nursery and nursery application form.  Forms are available for download and can be sent to the School Admissions Team for processing.  Alternatively, forms can be requested by phone on 01685 725000.

If you choose to apply by post it is your responsibility to make sure we received it. We recommend that posted forms are sent via recorded delivery as we will not acknowledge that your form is received.

We are not responsible for forms returned by post and missing forms cannot be investigated without evidence of posting.

How we tell you about the outcome of your application

For pre-nursery/nursery applications you will be notified in writing of the decision as follows:

Information for Parents

The entry of children into primary schools is controlled and administered by an 'Admissions Authority’ except for voluntary aided schools. For non-voluntary aided schools this is Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and for voluntary aided schools it’s the Governing body of the school.

Admissions to primary schools will normally be granted provided a schools admission number is not exceeded. Where the number of applications for admission to a school exceeds the number of places available, i.e. where an admission number has been reached, places will be allocated by applying the published oversubscription criteria.

If you’re a working parent, or a parent on an undergraduate, postgraduate or further education course, you could be eligible to receive funding towards your childcare costs!

Voluntary Aided Schools

There are 3 voluntary aided primary schools in Merthyr Tydfil. Each Voluntary Aided Schools Governing Body manages their own admissions and should be contacted directly.

Please Note: Where parents knowingly give false information in order to obtain the advantage of a particular school for their child to which they would not otherwise be entitled, the council reserves the right to withdraw the offer of a place. Parents may render themselves guilty of an offence under Section 5(b) of the Perjury Act 1911.
