Learning Disabilities

Learning Disabilities

We support people with learning disabilities to be independent as possible through the provision of a range of services.

Where necessary we work in partnership with Health, and Education colleagues to ensure that people receive the appropriate support to meet their needs.

Many community services can be contacted without connecting to social services and this can be found on the Dewis Cymru website.

If you require an assessment as a person with learning disabilities or as a carer please find further information via our How Do I Access Care and Support for Myself or Someone else webpage.

Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC)

Autism is often the short hand name given to a wide “spectrum” of conditions, which include Asperger’s Syndrome and High Functioning Autism (HFA). Whatever term is used similar approaches are needed.

Autism affects around 1 in 100 people in very different ways. Some can live typical and independent lives, form relationships and have children, while others will always need specialist support.  All will, however, have some difficulty in the following three areas:

  • Social communication
  • Social interaction
  • Social imagination

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council Social Services can also assess the individual’s needs and deliver services and/or sign post to services as appropriate.

Advice and help about education for children with ASC can we found on our Additional Learning Needs webpage.

Where can I find more information?

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is keen to provide information about organisations that can help you.

Further information about local services can be found on Dewis Cymru website.

However, we do not endorse any organisations nor do we take responsibility for any content on their website.
